Djerba Water Wisdom



Water is not merely a natural resource in Djerba but the very heart of daily life and the cornerstone of traditional architecture.

Located in a semi-arid zone, the island suffers from low annual rainfall that does not exceed 250 millimeters, about half the national average (400 millimeters). These harsh natural conditions led the inhabitants to devise ingenious systems for collecting and storing rainwater, most notably the feskia, an underground cistern fed by rooftops through finely designed channels. This technique, rooted in Roman times and perhaps earlier, evolved throughout the Islamic era and still stands as a testament to human adaptability.

The feskia is part of an integrated water system that also includes wells dug at varying depths depending on water availability. Djerba’s wells are distinguished by their unique architecture: two small wings, a pulley to draw the bucket, and a jabiya that receives the extracted water before distributing it to cultivated lands.

The sarout plays a crucial role in channeling water through stone conduits toward plantations, completing a distribution system that reflects ancestral expertise in service of agriculture.

This integration turned architecture itself into a water management tool: flat rooftops were designed to direct scarce rainfall toward the feskias, creating harmony between built structures and ecological function.


Water also shaped demographic stability. When its quality shifted from fresh to saline, population movements and settlement patterns were directly affected: some areas like Ghizen saw agricultural decline and partial abandonment, while others like Sedghiane flourished. Water thus became a decisive factor in human settlement and socio-economic networks.


Over time, these traditional systems faced numerous challenges: deterioration of heritage structures, pressure from modern urbanization, salinization reducing usability, decline in reliance compared to modern networks, and the impact of tourism encroaching on farmland. Unregulated drilling (sondage) further depleted natural reserves.


Including feskias in heritage protection and sustainability programs opens promising horizons: this traditional knowledge can serve as a practical resource for adapting to climate change and strengthening water security. In this way, water in Djerba remains a witness to human creativity and the ability to transform scarcity into a distinctive way of life.
